MOTHERSBAUGH – GAGOSIAN FLASH FLASH FLASH Feb 24th, 2017

Gagosian will be participating in Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair 2017, The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Los Angeles, California.

The fair will take place from February 24 through February 26, 2017.

Gagosian is pleased to present FLASH FLASH FLASH at Printed Matter’s Los Angeles Art Book Fair at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.

The “flash,” a stereotypical tattoo design drawn onto a piece of cardboard, and offered on the walls of tattoo parlors, occupies a particular place in industrial and graphic design—art conceived for the human body is now its own genre of drawing.

This year at the 2017 Los Angeles Art Book Fair, Gagosian will install a tattoo parlor offering original, readymade flash designs commissioned from artists Kenneth Anger, The Haas Brothers, Mark Mothersbaugh, Sterling Ruby, Analia Saban, and Henry Taylor. Christina Harris and Louis Perez III of Mark Mahoney’s Shamrock Social Club will be on hand in the booth to permanently tattoo these designs onto recipients during the fair.

This booth follows the success of the FLASH FLASH FLASH booth at the 2016 New York Art Book Fair, where thirty-six people were permanently tattooed with limited edition designs (ed. 6) by Devendra Banhart, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Douglas Gordon, Kim Gordon, Max Hooper Schneider, and Richard Wright.

Each permanent tattoo will be numbered on the skin of the recipient, and each design will be retired forever after six recipients have been tattooed, thus rendering the flash art as limited edition. Each original flash artwork has also been produced as a print on paper by The Lapis Press in Los Angeles in an edition of six.
